All Shall Be Afforded Dignity: The Art of Norman Kaplan

Art

London Exhibit

April 22 to May 6, 2024, and on-line

Brief Introduction:

The following is an on-line gallery of a recent London art exhibit featuring the work of Norman Kaplan. Norman is my brother-in-law and he is married to my sister Bronwen. They live in the Eastern Cape city of Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) in South Africa. Norman is an accomplished artist and, like many creative souls, his work has not enjoyed the acknowledgement that it genuinely deserves. None of his labor was in vain though, because much of his art’s purpose was to serve the cause of South African liberation. Fortunately, this has been recognized by the curators of a series of events marking the 30th anniversary of the official demise of apartheid. The promoters and curators have kindly allowed us to republish their on-line gallery of Norman’s work, which they had especially prepared for this particular exhibition. The gallery includes linocuts which Norman made in South Africa before and after he went into exile, and, for the first time in an exhibition of Kaplan’s work, reproduces some of the many cartoons and cartoon strips he made anonymously for the liberation movement from exile in London. The gallery also gives background biographical and contextual information. Beneath the link to the gallery are links to the organizers’ larger programs. Lest I be falsely accused of some form of Trumpian familial nepotism here, let me say that this art, mostly linocuts, is stunning stuff. My co-editors share this assessment too. We hope our readers get something of value out of this.
